Mentoring at UCSF: A Conversation with Mitch Feldman, MD, MPhil

Dr. Feldman is Professor of Medicine, Chief of the Division of General Internal Medicine of UCSF Health, and the Associate Vice Provost for Faculty Mentoring in the Office of Academic Affairs where he directs the UCSF Faculty Mentoring Program. He has published widely and his research on mentoring has shown that it is key to a more productive and successful  career in the academic health sciences. He has been a visiting professor and has lectured on mentoring at major universities across the US and Asia and was a Fulbright Research Scholar at Kyoto University in Japan. Dr. Feldman is the former Co-Editor in Chief of the Journal of General Internal Medicine and he is proud to be a member of the UCSF Academy of Medical Educators. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from The Johns Hopkins University, obtained an MPhil in Anthropology from Cambridge University, England and completed his MD and internal medicine training at UCSF.

In this informal ‘virtual’ lunchtime meeting, Dr. Feldman lead a discussion of topics such as: what are the key competencies of outstanding mentors and mentees; how to find and work more effectively with a mentor at UCSF; how to promote alignment in mentoring; how to effectively support a “virtual” mentoring relationship during the COVID-19 pandemic; and what is sponsorship and why does it matter.
