Import CV
Advance includes a CV import process. It was designed for initial setup of the CV, but can be used to import updated data into individual sections of the CV. See the Import documents on this page for details.
WARNING: using the Import process will "over-write" the data you may already have in your CV. It is ALWAYS a good idea to export your CV so you have a copy of your data prior to executing the import process.
A Word document, formatted to mirror a UCSF CV, can be imported into Advance in a few seconds. The challenge is adapting your CV to match the UCSF CV format.
- Make sure the headers match those expected in the Advance CV
- Make sure you have organized your information so it falls into the appropriate headers
- Using tabs or tables, format the information within each header to match the expected UCSF CV format
An initial import is typically an iterative process:
- Import the CV and review the results
- Working on one or two sections at a time, modify the Word document to better match the required format
- Import the CV and review the result
- Modify the Word document...etc.
Because the import process is so quick, the bulk of the time will be spent modifying the Word document to better match the required format.
Tips:
- Work on one or two sections at a time
- Allow sufficient time to get your CV into Advance - don't wait until the last minute because it could take 1-2 hours to complete an import of a relatively long CV
- Do NOT make changes within Advance (using the My CV editing tools) until you are satisfied that further changes to the Word doc will not improve the result
- At this time (12/22/2016) you cannot import into the Summary sections - copy/paste into these sections instead
